Midazolam HCl CIV 10ml - 50mg/ml
Midazolam is a benzodiazepine sedative with similar potency to diazepam. Compared to diazepam, the more hydrosoluble molecule of midazolam is shorter-acting, produces more constant absorption and better bioavailabiity after intramuscular injection. After IM administration the drug is rapidly absorbed and when given IV has a very rapid onset of action due to its high lipophilicity.
It is used as a sedative drug to facilitate physical or mechanical restraint, as well as to aid induction of anesthesia with other drugs (e.g., isoflurane). It is administered for a number of veterinary indications and can be effectively administered to dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, bears, primates, birds and other species.
The mechanism of action for midazolam is based on how it potentiates the inhibitory effects of GABA neurotransmitters and is shown to reduce serotonin and acetylcholine levels.
Midazolam can be reversed with the antagonist flumazenil.
